Where each one wins

YNAB is a great product. So is Ambit. They're built for different people.

YNAB is right for you if…

  • You want a strict, prescriptive methodology that tells you what to do
  • You want automatic bank sync via Plaid and don't mind cloud storage
  • You're already deep in the YNAB community and method
  • A subscription is fine and you want a polished native mobile app
  • You want phone-first envelope budgeting with real-time syncing across devices

Ambit is right for you if…

  • You want your financial data to stay on your device — never on someone's server
  • You're tired of subscriptions and want to pay once, own it forever
  • You'd rather see your spending and decide for yourself than follow a method
  • You're comfortable importing transactions from a CSV (most banks export this)
  • You want a flexible tool that bends to how you think — not the other way around

Switching from YNAB

If you've decided to try Ambit, here's the path. Takes about 20 minutes.

1

Export your YNAB data

In YNAB: Budget Settings → Export Budget. You'll get a CSV. Optionally export Transactions separately for a richer history.

2

Open the Ambit demo or your purchased copy

Try the free demo first to see if the layout works for you. No signup, no commitment. If you're sold, grab a license.

3

Import your transactions

Go to the Import page in Ambit. Paste the YNAB CSV or upload the file. Ambit's column mapper handles non-standard formats.

4

Set up your categories and payee rules

You can recreate your YNAB categories one-for-one, or use Ambit's Auto-Categorize to learn from your imported data. Most users finish setup in under 15 minutes.

5

Cancel your YNAB subscription

YNAB → Account Settings → Manage Subscription. You'll keep access until the end of your current billing period — plenty of time to make sure Ambit's working for you.

One more thing. Ambit doesn't have direct bank sync (no Plaid integration). That's a deliberate trade — Plaid is how your data leaves your device. If automatic sync is non-negotiable for you, stay with YNAB; we don't compete on that. If you can live with pasting a monthly CSV from your bank in exchange for actually owning your data, we'd love to have you.

Try it before you switch.
